Guwahati: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked chief secretary PK Barthakur and deputy commissioner of Morigoan district to inquire into Sunday’s alleged incident of rules violation inside Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary by two senior IAS officers.
A government source said, “The CM has asked for the inquiry report by Wednesday.” Forest minister Chandra Mohan Patowary is expected to visit the sanctuary on Wednesday for a ground report.
The two bureaucrats, along with their families, had visited the sanctuary on Sunday. One of the officers allegedly sat on the bonnet of a safari jeep and smoked cigarettes, while others alighted from the vehicles, both actions prohibited inside the forest.
The Jeep Safari Owners’ Association of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary had on Monday written to Sarma, seeking an inquiry into the incident. They claimed that when the jeep drivers and other staffers tried to prevent the visitors from breaking the rules for visitors to a wildlife sanctuary, the officers verbally abused them.
